Weak Read/Write Registers

چکیده

In [14], Lamport has defined three classes of shared registers which support read and write operations, called —safe, regular and atomic—depending on their properties when several reads and/or writes are executed concurrently. We consider generalizations of Lamport’s notions, called k-safe, k-regular and k-atomic. First, we provide constructions for implementing 1-atomic registers (the strongest type) in terms of k-safe registers (the weakest type). Then, we demonstrate how the constructions enable to easily and efficiently solve classical synchronization problems, such as mutual exclusion and l-exclusion, using single-writer multi-reader k-safe bits, for any k ≥ 1. We also explain how, by using k-registers, it is possible to provide some level of resiliency against memory reordering.

CoVer-ability: Consistent Versioning for Concurrent Objects

An object type characterizes the domain space and the operations that can be invoked on an object of that type. In this paper we introduce a new property for concurrent objects, we call coverability, that aims to provide precise guarantees on the consistent evolution of an object. This new property is suitable for a variety of distributed objects including concurrent file objects that demand op...

A Sub-threshold 9T SRAM Cell with High Write and Read ability with Bit Interleaving Capability

This paper proposes a new sub-threshold low power 9T static random-access memory (SRAM) cell compatible with bit interleaving structure in which the effective sizing adjustment of access transistors in write mode is provided  by isolating writing and reading paths. In the proposed cell, we consider a weak inverter to make better write mode operation. Moreover applying boosted word line feature ...

The Life in 1-Consensus

This paper introduces the atomic Write and Read Next (WRNk) deterministic shared memory object, that for any k ≥ 3, is stronger than read-write registers, but is unable to implement 2-processor consensus. In particular, it refutes the conjecture claiming that every deterministic object of consensus number 1 is computationally equivalent to read-write registers.

Another Look at the Implementation of Read/write Registers in Crash-prone Asynchronous Message-Passing Systems (Extended Version)

“Yet another paper on” the implementation of read/write registers in crash-prone asynchronousmessagepassing systems! Yes..., but, differently from its predecessors, this paper looks for a communication abstraction which captures the essence of such an implementation in the same sense that total order broadcast can be associated with consensus, or message causal delivery can be associated with c...

Is Compare-and-Swap Really Necessary?

The consensus number of a synchronization primitive, such as compare-and-swap or fetch-and-add, is the maximum number of processes n among which binary consensus can be solved by using read-write registers and registers supporting the synchronization primitive. As per Herlihy’s seminal result, any synchronization primitive with consensus number n can be used to construct a wait-free and lineari...
